Deck railings and stairs in York
Guards and steps that are solid underfoot, easy to grip and built to current Pennsylvania dimensions.
Railings and stairs take more wear than any other part of a deck, and they're what keeps people from falling. Homeowners across York County can get connected with a contractor who replaces wobbly guards, rebuilds uneven stairs or upgrades to vinyl, aluminum or composite railing.
Dimensions inspectors check
York Township's deck specifications list the numbers it applies, which reflect the residential code:
- Guardrails at least 36 inches tall, with openings no larger than 4 inches
- Guards on stairs at least 34 inches, measured vertically from the nose of the step
- Stair risers no taller than 8¼ inches, all equal
- Treads at least 9 inches nose to nose, or 10 inches without a nosing
- A handrail on at least one side of stairs with four or more risers
Railing materials
| Material | Good for | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Treated wood | Lowest cost; can be painted or stained | Needs upkeep; posts loosen as wood dries |
| Vinyl | Clean white look common on Pennsylvania homes | Relies on internal post supports |
| Aluminum | Slim profile, no rust | Check finish and warranty |
| Composite | Matches composite decking | Follow the system's span limits |
Signs your railing or stairs need work
- Posts move when you push them
- Balusters missing or loose, or wide gaps
- Risers of different heights; treads that tip or crack
- No handrail, or one that ends before the bottom step
- Stringers rotted where they meet the ground
Why they wear out
Guard posts take sideways force every time someone leans on them, and in a damp climate the wood around their bolts softens over the years. Many older decks used notched posts with a pair of lag screws. Stair stringers often sit right on soil or a paver, where they stay wet. Frost can also lift the bottom landing a little each winter.
What drives the price?
- Linear feet of railing and number of stairs
- Material and style
- Blocking or new posts to anchor guards
- A concrete pad or landing at the bottom
- Permit, if required by your municipality
